It’s no surprise then that the company’s two latest flagship phones have people wondering what is similar and what is different about the two devices. In the last month, Apple has unveiled its iPhone 8 Plus phablet flagship and Google has unveiled its Google Pixel 2 XL phablet. Both phones are huge – and both also have tech that is very similar. But there are differences. Here’s how they compare.

  • Dimensions: 158.4mm x 78.1 mm x 7.5 mm
  • Weight: 202 grams
  • Storage: 64 or 256GB
  • Memory: 3 GB RAM
  • Processors: A11 Bionic
  • Front camera: 7 MP
  • Rear camera: 12 MP Dual Lens telephoto and wide-angle
  • Battery: 2675 mAh, Wireless charging
And here’s the specs for the Google Pixel 2 XL:
  • Display: 6in display with 2880 x 1440 resolution at 538ppi, pOLED
  • Dimensions: 157.9mm x 76.7 mm x 7.9 mm
  • Weight: 175 grams
  • Storage: 64GB or 128GB
  • Memory: 4GB LPDDR4x RAM
  • Processors: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
  • Front camera: 8 MP, 1080p video
  • Rear camera: 12.2 MP, Optical + electronic image stabilization, 4K video
  • Battery: 3520 mAh
The Google Pixel 2 XL comes with 25% more RAM than the iPhone 8 Plus at 4GB versus 3GB. Yet even with all that RAM, the Pixel 2 XL can’t compete in the processing department against the iPhone 8 Plus. That’s because the Pixel 2 XL has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 CPU. Yes, it’s a respectable chip, but it looks positively archaic when you compare it to the iPhone 8 Plus’ new A11 Bionic chip with its neural engine. It can run circles around anything Qualcomm can currently produce. In short, the iPhone is much more powerful than the Pixel 2 XL – even with that extra RAM.
As for storage, both phones come in 64GB versions, but only the iPhone 8 Plus also offers a 256GB model. Then again, the Google Pixel 2 XL comes in with that sweet spot 128GB of storage, which is probably all most people need. It’s a very attractive storage offering.

iPhone 8 Plus vs Google Pixel 2 XL: Display & Design

The iPhone 8 Plus and Google Pixel 2 XL are both large phones. But the Google Pixel 2 XL’s display is bigger and better than the 8 Plus. That’s because of a few things: first, it’s larger at 6in; second, it’s an OLED display; and third, it’s got a higher resolution. The 5.5in display on the iPhone 8 Plus isn’t bad at all–it’s just the Google Pixel 2 XL’s display is higher spec’d.
The Google Pixel 2 XL also wins in the design depart because, though it has a bigger display, the phone is physically smaller that the iPhone 8 Plus. That’s because Google has moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device, allowing it to shorten the “forehead” and “chin” bezels on the front of the device (and thus giving extra space for the screen). The iPhone 8 Plus still has a big forehead and chin. But on the flip side, that beautiful Touch ID button is easy to access because it’s right in front of you.

iPhone 8 Plus vs Google Pixel 2 XL: Battery

The Pixel 2 XL has a much bigger battery at 3520 mAh, but you won’t see too much of a battery life increase over the 2675 mAh found in the iPhone 8 Plus. That’s because the Pixel 2 XL needs more battery to power its hungry display. Also, only the iPhone 8 Plus offers wireless charging–and we’re pretty bummed Google didn’t include the feature on the Pixel 2 XL.

iPhone 8 Plus vs Google Pixel 2 XL: Cameras

As far as cameras go, the iPhone 8 Plus beats the Pixel 2 XL in the rear camera department. That’s because the iPhone 8 Plus offer dual 12MP telephoto and wide angle lenses in the rear. It’s really disappointing Google has stuck with a single-lens system in the rear. It’s 2017 and most other flagships now come with dual lens cameras. Google does win out in the front camera department: its selfie camera is 8MP versus the 7MP sensor found in the iPhone 8 Plus.

iPhone 8 Plus vs Google Pixel 2 XL: Cost

Unlocked the iPhone 8 Plus will cost £799 (64GB) and £949 (256GB). For the Google Pixel 2 XL you’ll pay £799 for the 64GB model and £899 for the 128GB model. For that extra £50 in the high-end option you get double the storage and a much better camera on the iPhone. Of course, the Pixel 2 XL does offer the better screen however. It’s a tough call – but one made easier of you are already married to iOS or Android.
